Recording and Rehearsal Studios in Bristol

Recording and Rehearsal Studios in Bristol

It's a satisfying day for a guitar teacher when one of their students starts creating music of their own. The world of recording can be a complicated one: with so many places to choose from with different equipment and prices, how do you know which studio to go for? So, like the guardian angels we are, we’ve put together a list of Bristol’s best studios for you to help you out!

Room 4 Studios

Room 4 Studios is situated at 145a Whitehall Road, Bristol, BS5 9BJ and has everything a band would possibly need to record an EP. Not only does Room 4 double up as a rehearsal and recording space, but it also hires out equipment for bands who want to put on live shows. This hire service is very good value: you can hire a Vox AC30 (as used by Brian May, Johnny Greenwood, The Edge etc) for a £35/day and a fully operational Peavey PA system for the only £30/day. Prices for recording are reasonable, although they do not offer a pay-as-you-go service that some studios offer, but this reflects the quality service that Room 4 provides. A day’s worth of recording costs £150, which is less than £20 an hour! Look at their EP deals for £500 as well; if you’re looking to produce more than just a couple of tracks, this is the most cost-effective way to do it in Bristol.

Dockside Studios

Dockside Studios is a professional rehearsal and recording facility, located in central Bristol. Situated in a picturesque location right by Bristol Marina, Dockside Studios are run by musicians, for musicians, so know exactly what any aspiring musicians will want. The prices of the studio are perfect for anyone with an amateur budget or who want to record on a pay-as-you-go basis: for an hour’s worth of recording, they only charge a very reasonable £20! To top it all off, the owners Steve and Ellie are very friendly and will always do everything they can to help. If this sounds like it’s your sort of recording atmosphere, Dockside Studios is located down at Unit 15, Albion Dockside Estate, Hanover Place, Bristol, BS1 6UT.

Toybox Studios

Toybox Studios can be found at 25 Portland Square, Bristol BS2 8NN in a Georgian Basement and can boast a list of clients that no other recording studio in Bristol can match. PJ Harvey, KT Tunstall, Seasick Steve, Gruff Rhys and Mark Ronson have all recorded here and Toybox has recorded for the likes of Atlantic Records, Aardman Animations, Witchita and Atlantic Records as well. As you’d expect from a clientele from this calibre, Toybox studios are not the cheapest recording studio in Bristol and I’d avoid it if you’re trying to record on a tight budget. But if you’ve got cash to spare, this is definitely worth checking out. All their equipment is top quality and available to record with: if recording with Fender Jaguars (my personal favourite), Fender Jazzmasters and Marshal JMP50 heads sounds like your cup of tea, look no further.

Woodshed Recording Studio

Woodshed Recording Studio is the coolest recording studio in Bristol, and perfect for laying down a couple of catchy riffs in a really chilled-out environment. Ben Capp and Mikey Melican, The Woodshed’s creators, have created one of the most original looking studios I have ever seen, complete with make-shirt driftwood table and an eclectic collection of carpets. The Woodshed also has the added bonus of being located in an art space called The Island: located at Nelson Street, Bristol, BS1 2LE, it is a converted Police Station that houses a dance studio, a visual arts space and a circus training room. With such an artistic environment, it might just give you the creative incentive you need to make a kick-ass recording.
